Safeguarding at St John Fisher Catholic College

At St John Fisher it is the responsibility of ALL staff to safeguard our learners. Regular training and updates mean that all colleagues are confident in identifying signs that learners are struggling emotionally or with their mental health and staff are confident in identifying signs of potential abuse.

We develop positive relationships with our learners to enable them to thrive and we share information strictly on a ‘needs to know’ basis. It is also critical to us to develop good relationships with our learners’ parents and families, and it is our intention to share concerns that may arise, with parents, where this is possible and in the interests of safeguarding individual learners. We have staff trained and experienced in offering pastoral care for learners in school and we also work closely with external agencies who can offer specialised support needed at times. We know that sometimes it is necessary to involve safeguarding partners and have a very successful record in working with social care, police and health.

In February 2021 St John Fisher Catholic College became part of ‘Operation Encompass’. This is a police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership, which supports children, and young people who experience Domestic Abuse. Operation Encompass means that the police will share information about Domestic Abuse incidents with our school prior to the start of the next school day when they have been called to a domestic incident involving a learner at St John Fisher, whether the child was present at the incident, or not. This allows key safeguarding individuals in school to check on the wellbeing of children experiencing domestic abuse and offer sensitive further support, should this be required.
